The copy of Windows 7 I have is a Windows 7 UPGRADE 64-bit Professional virtual copy from 2009. I got it as part of a "software4students" deal, whereby software is significantly discounted for students (the then new Windows 7 was reduced from ￡180 to ￡35). I had several problems with the purchase due to the fact that I had to buy it while in the college, so a lot of the emails got sent to my college email address (and possibly lost). I had to hunt down the product key after I didn't receive it, and I had a .iso file, which I burned to a disc and lost. I downloaded the .exe file, but never upgraded my laptop to Windows 7 unless Vista really crapped up (I don't dislike the software enough to change it; believe it or not some people have had a relatively smooth experience with the OS). So what I basically have is a Windows 7 upgrade PRODUCT KEY that is legitimate.
Over the Summer, I have been designing a computer to build. I had a company build the computer for me at a discounted price, using the exact components I specified. I decided to use the Windows 7 product key to put windows 7 onto the computer (they said they would supply a disc). But now the computer has been built, they are having problems installing the OS. As it is an upgrade version, they need a previous version on there to upgrade it from (i.e Vista 64 bit). Fair enough, but the error they received was that the product key was incorrect. This occurred while they were trying to install Windows 7 using a disc that is standalone (i.e. a non-upgrade disc. I think the terminology is "OEM", but I'm not sure). Now, it's been a week since they started trying to install to OS, and they have still gotten nowhere. I assume they're now trying to install an earlier Windows OS on the system to upgrade from, but don't they have to pay for that OS that they upgrade from? I.e. if you had a copy of Vista, and you had 3 product keys for it (not sure if this is how it works for OSs, but it's how it worked for my copy of MS Office 2007), and someone used one of those forwindows vista oem download free upgrade purposes (installed it on their machine, then immediately "upgraded" it to their legit version of a newer OS (i.e. Windows 7)), would they be able to use that same product key again? Or would they then have only 2 product keys to use? I seriously don't understand how product keys work...
Anyway, like I said, it's been a week. they've been holding onto this completely buolt and ready-to-go BUT OS free computer for a week, trying (not very hard, it seems) to put the damn OS on there. My main question is this: Should I just take the comptuer off their hands and tell them not to worry about it, download a counterfeit version of Windows and just upgrade from that? Or should I let them try and 'fix it'? Will they be willing to use one of their product keys for a different OS so that they can upgrade my comptuer to Windows 7? Will they then be able to claim that product key back after the system is upgraded to Windows 7? Will they want me to pay another ￡80 for another OS so that they can upgrade? Is that why they've been faffing around all this time?
What is the best thing for me to do in this situation? Obviously the issue is stressing me out, as a seemingly very simple problem (in my mind) is taking ages to resolve, and I'm very anxious to get my new computer so I can sort it all out, put antiviruses on it, transfer data over etc.

Your upgrade key will only work to upgrade a computer that already has a windows operating system installed. XP or Vista. You are still going to need to buy an operating system so why not just buy an OEM version of windows 7 Home Premium (either 32 bit or 64 bit version.....your new computer probably will support 64 bit.
First i would get your computer from the shop and secondly I would buy an OEM version of win 7 and install it on your computer. An OEM system disk costs about $100- for either 32 or 64 bit version at Tiger Direct. An OEM version can be installed on one computer multiple times (it is "keyed" to the motherboard and you can install or changwindows vista oem download freee video cards sound cards optical drives and hard drives without any problems).

The 32 bit version is the same price so you can check with the computer shop to find out which version would be best for you.
Another option would be to buy the O/S and take it to the shop and let them install it for you.

It is against Microsoft terms and conditions to install an upgrade version of their software onto a clean installed system.
This includes upgrading from an older operating system that does not belong to you, so the company that is building your computer would be breaking the conditions set out by Microsoft if they installed an older version of windows just so they can upgrade it and would render all licenses obsolete and illegal.
If it does not already have an operating system on it that belongs to you then you need to purchase a retail version or an OEM ( as the conditions state that an OEM can be supplied with a newly purchased computer ), that would need to be installed and activated before an upgrade was attempted.

magellan software updatesMagellan Maestro 3100 Software Updating Problems?
Hi. I just bought a magellan maestro 3100 a few days ago. I took it out for a drive and I figured out that the software was outdated and so I looked on their website for a update. I found it, but I am having a lot of trouble with the process. I have the update downloaded onto my computer, but when I go to put in the memory card, and plug in the usb, it says the battery is too low and there is no memory card found. I am really frustrated with this. Please help!
Here's a MANUAL approach that will update and fix the problem. A few of us have used it and it works, it's just not as easy as the AUTO approach. Magellan says an updated fix will be posted soon. I tried it and it worked for me - no promises, but check it out.
It'll take about 15 minutes if you carefully follow these step-by-step.
1. Unzip downloaded file
2. Use WinRAR to extract the executeable (they will all be in a file folder)
3. Create USBTRANS file in SYS folder on unit (or copy the backup that was made on the SD card)
4. Copy the contents of COPY_GROUP 1, 11, 13, 17 to USBTRANS which is in the SYS folder
5. Copy the contents of COPY_GROUP 2, 3, 5, 7, 8 to MAP
6. Copy the contents of COPY_GROUP 4, 6, 12, 14, 15 to APP
(NOTE: in order to copy the contents of group 14 over to the APP folder, you will need to copy the contents of TNShell_Bitmap\Venus2 to the same folder on the unit, that way the folder isn't just replaced.)
7. Copy contents of COPY_GROUP 9 and 10 to SD card
8. Copy contents of COPY_GROUP 16 to USR
9. Once copied over, unplug the unit and it should reset itself. Then all should be working
DON'T FORGET to put in the UNIT_ID.DAT file back in the USBTRANS folder if you haven't already. It may already be in there.

By the way the unit did some pretty weird stuff just after it came back up (after unplugging the UBS cable) but after one additional power cycle it was good to go. I also called Magellan and they also told me to "Take it back to store and exchance it". Poor, poor business.

Magellan's web site and support is the worst I've ever encountered! As a result, do not purchase or recommend a Magellan product! My 3100 was a Christmas gift. WARNING: Magellan's update DOES NOT WORK! It caused the 3100 unit to fail completely. Luckily, I found your manual fix and it worked!

The info that anthony posted got my 3100 working again... But most of the buttons was screwed up (but still worked)... So now i'm going to try the update again to see what happens... If all fails i'm taking my gps back to the store to get another unit or i may just go with TomTom XL....

if its on a computer there is a small hole around the faceplate using a straighted paper clip push it in the hole and it should push the disk tray out for you to pull it out the rest of thedvd player way, if your using a entertainment center DVD and it doesn't have that little hole you may have to take the DVD player apart to get it out. Make Sure To Have Power Off And Unplug It In Either Situation
If the DVD player is unpluged and your not going to get it fixed thendvd player carefully unscrew the screws on the bottom or side of the unit and take the cover off. You will find your DVD once the top is removed. Good luck!!

I'm downloading from limewire (movies) but its taking hours. would the pro version be a lot better or another site? new to this so not too sure about any of it.after 20 mins its done about 20%. is this right?

The GB and the internet have nothing to do with each other. The GB is just for how much video, music, photo's, apps, etc you can store on it. I ipod touchI have the 8GB which is plenty big for me. The Internet browser is like you would see on a computer, not on a cellphone.

OEM software software can be downloaded legally at discount prices. The reason that the prices are cheaper than retail is because of reduced costs associated with CDs, packaging, marketing, shipping, manuals, etc. You don't get any of this with OEM software but the trade off is that it is cheaper.
A lot of people don't realize what the bulk of the cost is in buying software. It is not a box or a disk or a manual, but rather a license to use the software.
I have bought OEM software in the past and been happy with it. The discount for the particular product you mentioned seems steep (so I would be highly suspicious). Is this a respectable company? Unfortunately, the only way to know if you are buying a legal product is to see some kind of proof that the distrubtor has the legal right to sell the software. Some sort of distribution/licensing agreement. Why not send an email and ask for proof that the product is legit? It would be the safe play for your legal concerns.

OEM software software can be downloaded legally at discount prices. The reason that the prices are cheaper than retail is because of reduced costs associated with CDs, packaging, marketing, shipping, manuals, etc. You don't get any of this with OEM software but the trade off is that it is cheaper.
A lot of people don't realize what the bulk of the cost is in buying software. It is not a box or a disk or a manual, but rather a license to use the software.
I have bought OEM software in the past and been happy with it. The discount for the particular product you mentioned seems steep (so I would be highly suspicious). Is this a respectable company? Unfortunately, the only way to know if you are buying a legal product is to see some kind of proof that the distrubtor has the legal right to sell the software. Some sort of distribution/licensing agreement. Why not send an email and ask for proof that the product is legit? It would be the safe play for your legal concerns.

I personally downloaded AVG anti virus and used it for a year. It seemed to work but not to my full satisfaction. Also, at the end of the year you have to buy it anyway. I also sort of remember reading in their download agreement info that your name is kept for future advertisers. AVG is based in Europe somewhere. I wasn't too happy about that, but like you, it was free and I was financially strapped at that time.
If you have to buy, I would recommend Zone Alarm Security (with anti-virus & spyware). This is a fabulous system and you only have one software that covers both virus security and spyware, automatically checks your email for "Junk Mail" and "Phishing Mail" and moves these to specific folders in your Inbox list. Very easy to update and work with.
On a final note, I just didn't feel that the AVG did the best job. What do you expect for a freebie, right? NOTE: Most freeby downloads seem to always have a spy atavg anti virus free downloadtached! Therefore, I have now realized it doesn't pay to get free software off the internet. Your computer will suffer eventually from that download. I know mine did!

Hi,I'd like to know if downloading games from a site that might be illegal will put you in trouble. Also, is it illegal to download official freeware/ officially free games from torrent sites like isohunt and the pirate bay? Is it also ok to download officially free games from sites besides what the company approved of?

If the game is officially freeware (as in the person or company that made it gave permission to redistribute it) then it's fine, it doesn't matter who you got it from. But sometimes a company will give away a game free but NOT give permission to redistribute, in that case it would technically still be copyright infringement if you get it somewhere else.
I can't say for sure so don't take this as your primary surefire answer, but I believe that as long as the content is lfree download freeware gamesegally free then the source probably doesn't matter. Still, torrenting is an easy way to become a malware haven, so if it's already free then I would suggest just getting it from the official source. This may not be true if the company has some specific statement about where the content comes from, though.

I have downloaded a software called Internet Download Manager V 5.11 by the developer called Tonec Inc. and it can grab video files from many sites. I think it's a great software but unfortunately this software comes with a 30 days trial.
